You can play karaoke files with TiMidity by simply changing the .kar extenstion to .mid. You should be able to see the lyrics scrolling on the GUI.
An even better way to see the lyrics is to drop the file on MidiPlay.bat in your timidity directory to run it in DOS mode. You can also drop a playlist (.pls) file if you want. The lyrics will appear on the top line, or press "t" to toggle the display. You can get Help in the DOS version by pressing "h" while Timidity is running.
