sound...font whothe-whatthe...?

ok ok ok, call me a n00b or whatever it is you people call us new.. things... but what exactly is a soundfont? I'l kinda like to figger out wtf I'm downloading so I know what it does <and so I have an idea on how to fix it if it screwed up somewheres along the line [or, even worse, if it screwed sommit up in my system]>
but that is another story.
on another subject <actually, just my ADD kicking in [Attention Deficit Disorder, just FYI]>, the grammer here is incorrect. WinAmp is supposed to be Winamp :::checks his Winamp player to make sure::: yup there is definately a single capital in the name so therefore WinAmp is a disgrace to the Winamp community and player, and to me <god, I'm such a drama queen ;D >

oh yea, one last thing, will these soundfont thingies work with other programs.. like Winamp 5 and WiMP 9?

Sorry, I didn't find anything that I found sufficient, so I thought I would add here. Is there somewhere some instruction on how to get a soundfont to work? All I find is the automatic Sf2 configurator, which only works on windows. So, I thought I would have a go at doing it myself, but I don't really see how to get started.

So, can someone point me in a useful direction?

Actually, the automatic configurator thingy doesn't work in windows either. It doesn't generate the file it says it does. At least, not under Win7 x64. Doing a systemwide search reveals no trace of timidity.cfg

There is also no timw32g.cfg file anywhere on my C drive (I installed it to the default directory).
